How to Choose a Reciprocating Pump: Piston, Plunger
October 28, 2026
Reciprocating pumps are widely used in oil and gas field water injection, high pressure cleaning, cementing pressurization, drilling mud, and other fields due to their precision and stability. Among them, piston pumps and plunger pumps are the most frequently used types.
1. Working Principle
Both piston pumps and plunger pumps belong to the positive displacement principle, but their structures are fundamentally different. Piston pumps rely on a piston assembly reciprocating within the cylinder, using piston rings or soft seals in contact with the cylinder wall to form a seal. Plunger pumps use a precision-machined solid plunger that slides within a fixed cylinder liner or packing gland, maintaining high-pressure sealing through the fit between the plunger's outer surface and the sealing elements.
2. Differences Between Piston Pumps and Plunger Pumps
Piston Pump
Plunger Pump
Sealing Position
Installed on the piston, moving with it
Fixed in the pump head; the plunger slides within it
Pressure Range
Medium-to-low pressure
Medium-high to ultra-high pressure
Wear Resistance
Depends on cylinder liner material and treatment
Plunger surface can be hardened, offering good wear resistance
Maintenance Difficulty
Cylinder liner needs to be disassembled — relatively complex
Seal replacement is relatively convenient
Typical Applications
Drilling mud, large-flow transfer
High pressure cleaning, oilfield water injection
3. Advantages and Limitations of Reciprocating Pumps
Their advantages lie in high flow control precision and strong pressure adaptability. They can establish extremely high discharge pressures, meeting the demands of deep well water injection and high-pressure cleaning. However, they have many moving parts, and seals are prone to wear, resulting in high maintenance workload and certain requirements for media cleanliness. This is especially true for plunger pumps — hard particles can easily damage the sealing surface and shorten service life.
For low-pressure, large-flow, particle-containing applications, piston pumps are preferred; for high pressure applications with relatively clean media and wear resistance requirements, plunger pumps are preferred.
